Raised in an unstable home with parents who doted on him too much, Kim Jong Un developed into a spoiled and entitled child. A boy his grandmother described as "the golden boy", he was obsessed with American culture, particularly basketball and Dennis Rodman.He reportedly used the first five years of his rule to purge anyone who could pose a threat to his power. His half-brother Kim Jong Nam was assassinated in Malaysia, where he had been living in exile, under mysterious circumstances.The 38th parallel has long divided the world into two halves of prosperity or poverty, separated by history and politics. The difference between the two Koreas is startling - one has an abundance of natural resources, a thriving economy and the other is left with scraps to survive.The current leader Kim Jong-Un's grandfather Kim Il-sung was born into a poor family in Mangyongdae, son to a Christian father and a Korean mother. Il-sung grew up with his mother's family in Hoeryeong County, North Hamgyong Province. He lived difficultly during the years of Japanese rule under his name "Kim Song Ju" until Japan's defeat in 1945 when he returned to Pyongyang. He later became active politically during the post World War II era and set out on a path to unite the divided Korea through military force. Kim Il-sung is the leader of North Korea under the title of "Eternal President" and is recognized as the country's founder, even though his beginnings were humble. He is currently dead, but his legacy continues through his son Kim Jong-il who has recently deceased. When Kim Il-sung died in July 1994, he was unable to pass on power to his own bloodline so he passed it down to his son Kim Jong-il who became Leader of North Korea at age 52. This succession of leadership has had some problems because Kim Jong-Il is not related by blood to Kim il-Sung; however, this did not stop him from gaining power over the country. He is the son of Kim Jong Il and Ko Yong Hui. He is the youngest of three children born to Ko. His older brother, Kim Jong Chul, was born in 1981. His sister, Kim Yo Jong, was born in 1987. All three children spent their childhood at home with their mother because their father was busy ruling the country.Early life for Kim Jong-un wasn't easy; many people consider his early years as difficult because he was put under scrutiny by his father whose expectations were high for his son; this ultimately led to arguments between the two (Kim Jong-un and his father). Although, this probably helped prepare him for future leadership roles in North Korea. His father wanted him to be a leader who was involved in military affairs, Kim Jong-un went to school outside of North Korea. He attended the International School of Bern in Switzerland for a few years. While at school, Kim Jong-un met many new people outside his country which showed him new perspectives on life. During his time at home, he was enrolled in Pyongyang's "No. 2" High School after being homeschooled by his mother Ko Yong Hui following an argument with his father.
